FRAGMENTS OF THE PAST: Empowering Refugees and Asylum Seekers to create ceramic art that reminds them of their homeland.

In March 2024, Our community believed there was a lack of wellbeing art being implemented for refugees and asylum seekers. Fragments of the past was created to empower refugees and asylum seekers from different parts of the world through the creation of ceramic tiles. Inspired by landscapes, traditional furniture, calligraphy from their homelands. The project involved an artistic exploration of their life. Narratives and the notion of cultural roots. Participants engaged in a series of creative workshops to delve into the art of working with clay, specifically focusing on producing 3D tiles, textured tiles and

calligraphic tiles.

The workshop was conducted by multidisciplinary accessories and product designer Sidra Zubairi.

Through the workshops, the group learned to create textures by making imprints of personal objects from home and exploring sculpting and molding techniques to craft three-dimensional tiles.

Additionally, participants gained hand-on experience in glazing and firing clay tiles to achieve vibrant and colourful designs.

The project aimed to not only foster creative expression but also provide a platform for refugees to reconnect with their cultural heritage and engage in creative discussions through the medium of ceramic.
